Fodder Crops
With the current change in common agricultural policy, decoupling of subsidies and challenging financial environment the interest in fodder crops is ever growing. Fodder crops can be zero grazed or fed in field, either way is a lot cheaper that feeding silage. Some of the more popular fodder crops and our favoured varieties are:
Kale
Sown April to July, kale is a winter long, high yielding fodder crop, which can be fed until late spring. Kale will yield 8 tonne per hectare, and best direct drilled into long term grass pasture. Stock fed on kale should be supplemented with silage and minerals. Our preferred varieties are Proteor & Maris Kestrel.
Stubble Turnips
The quickest yielding fodder crop of all will feed eight weeks after sowing. Used mainly as a catch crop after cereals, sown directly into stubble. Producing a very cheap feed for finishing lambs or running cattle on. Can be sown at anytime through the spring or summer whenever there is sufficient moisture in the soil. Best strip grazed to minimize on waste. Our preferred varieties are Barkant, Barabus & Tyfon stubble turnips.
Agglethorpe Mixture
Agglethorpe is our own special fodder crop mixture, designed and tested by Peter G Pybus. It is a mixture of forage rape and stubble turnips that create fast establishment and a high yielding crop. The rape produces ground cover to withhold moisture and the turnips then give exceptional yield. Resulting in a very palatable mixed fodder crop.
Fodder Beet
Grown mainly in sugar beet areas fodder beet is a main crop that requires high inputs, compared to the above. Fodder beet can be grazed or lifted depending on conditions. Fodder beet is a high sugar, high fibre feed that is suitable for sheep and cattle, and either fed whole or chopped. Our preferred variety is Jamon.
